Mr. David Hayter
Social Studies Department Head & Social Studies Teacher
- Bachelor of Arts Degree, Triple Major – History, International Studies, and Japanese from California State University, Long Beach (Long Beach, CA, USA)
- Focus on social conflict in East Asia & the Middle East as well as international culture & identity
- Associate of Arts Degree, Double Major – Pacific Rim Culture and Liberal Arts from Long Beach City College (Long Beach, CA, USA)
- Focus on the Japanese language
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate (USA)
- Social Studies Grade 7-12 Standard Teaching License from the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (Washington DC, USA)
- Qualified Teacher Status from the United Kingdom Department for Education (UK)
While growing up in the “International City” of Long Beach, CA in the USA, I enjoyed learning about different countries and cultures. Going to school with peers from a variety of different backgrounds gave me an appreciation for diversity and taught me how to get along with all kinds of people.
When I went on to university, my interest in society and culture led me to pursue degrees in History, International Studies, and Japanese. Outside of school, I gained a lot of professional experience by working in different positions ranging from retail management and private security to freelance writing and assisting with research in higher education.
Before moving to Vietnam in 2019, I taught English in Japanese public schools for five years. In this role, I taught a wide range of students from kindergarten to junior high school. I also volunteered my time teaching English to students from South America and putting on events at orphanages. My experience in Vietnam includes teaching English, tutoring international school students, and working with a team to help prepare students to apply to universities overseas.
For educational professionals, I think our highest priority is to prepare our students to succeed in the next stage of their life. For most students, that means learning the skills necessary to get into and do well in university. Giving students as many opportunities as possible to ask questions, think about problems critically, and express their opinion is essential in achieving this goal.
As a third-generation teacher, I look forward to working with our students and other teachers at the American School to build a positive learning environment that helps each student reach their full potential.

Mr. Wiley Jackson
Social Studies Teacher
- Master of Education – The College of New Jersey – (Ewing, NJ, USA)
- Certificate in Secondary Education -The College of New Jersey – (Ewing, NJ, USA)
- CELTA – Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
- Bachelor’s of Arts – Political Science – College of Charleston (Charleston, SC, USA)
- Bachelor’s of Arts – Religious Studies – College of Charleston (Charleston, SC, USA)
Who Am I?
I’m an American Israeli educator born in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina along the Atlantic Coast. I’ve traveled the world as both an educator and student and have yet to quench my thirst for learning. For my undergraduate degrees I studied Counter Terror Politics and Theories of Religions, believing that to understand a people and culture you must first understand how they see the world. Afterwards I worked in Washington, DC with various non-profit organizations that fought to protect the rights of victims of domestic human trafficking. It was in Washington, DC that I also discovered a love and passion for teaching when I had an opportunity to work with international exchange students from 54 different nations. Since then, I have put all of my energy into becoming the best educator I can possibly be. I’ve had the honor to teach in the United States, Israel, Hungary, and multiple cities and provinces in Vietnam.
My Education Philosophy:
Throughout my teaching career I have come to believe in six principles that guide me as an educator:
- Gaining knowledge is incidental to learning.
- Learning should be engaging both mentally and physically.
- Learning happens everywhere, and from everyone.
- Listen to your students.
- Always do your best.
- The truest aim of teaching is to produce active lifelong learners.
First and foremost, gaining knowledge is incidental to learning. If learning is a transformative process in which one becomes able to do something that they were not prior to, then the act of simply gaining knowledge isn’t learning. Knowledge gained is secondary to the skills needed to be able to successfully analyze and disseminate information.
Education should be both mentally and physically engaging. The more students engage with a subject in dynamic and various ways the more they will retain the lesson. This also allows for a large amount of differentiation to reach more students. Activities like simulations, discovery maps, gallery walks, surveys, and various other activities allow students to move about while increasing student participation. This, combined with more traditional forms of pair work and individual research, provides students with a varied and dynamic learning environment which stimulates growth and brain development.
Learning happens everywhere, and from everyone. This includes teachers being open to learn from students as learning is a co-operative experience. It allows students to witness that learning is a lifelong activity in which educators demonstrate to students an openness to learn alongside them. Openness and frankness also reminds educators that we have to listen to our students. This helps to identify key areas in which students and educators alike are struggling, and where educators can provide support to help students achieve their learning goals.
It is imperative to push students to “Always do your best.” As educators, we need to recognize our own limitations, as well as the students’, and try to push the class to achieve the most that everyone can at that moment. It also means teaching the students that their “best” is an always fluctuating marker that can change from day to day. This is key to making students feel comfortable in participating in class activities and feel comfortable with having incorrect answers. When students understand this concept, that always doing their best is a fluctuating marker, it removes the false stigma that having a wrong answer is an indication of their intelligence level or that is it a critique of their worth as a student. This, in turn, leads to students feeling comfortable taking risks.
All of these things together culminate in the truest aim of teaching is to create active lifelong learners. If a student’s education ends at the property line of the school, then we as educators have failed to prepare them for the rest of their lives. An educator’s role is to ensure that students have the tools necessary to meet, adapt, and overcome any obstacles that they may come across in their daily lives. Thus, having taught them the skills necessary to begin to successfully navigate the world, students are primed to continue active learning into the rest of their life.
My Priority at the American School (TAS)
- To ensure that every student is safe, encouraged, and provided with an environment from which they can grow.
- To provide the students with the skills they need to successfully navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
- To ensure students have a chance to have fun while learning.

Ms. Veronica Arthemalle

WHO AM I?
I was born and raised in Italy, and I have spent the last ten years working internationally in several different countries in three continents, among those are Rwanda, Mongolia, Iran, the UAE and others.
MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
I have always been fascinated by different cultures and traditions and I have been curious about the world. Studying history and the past as well as working as a teacher gave me the opportunity to live my passions and at the same time to hopefully be helpful to others.
In fact, I hope to help students not only learn but also be curious and have a different perspective on things and life. I want them to understand that there is no challenge that cannot be overcome or problem that cannot be resolved if they put their mind and commitment into it.
This is very much what school and life are about: continuously striving to be better than the day before and achieve the best results that each one of us can reach. This is why my goal is to provide students with knowledge and critical thinking, so that they can reach their full potential.

Ms. Nicole Burdick
English Department Head & English Teacher
- BA Literature – Emory University
- MSc Creative Writing – University of Edinburgh
WHO AM I?
I love learning, traveling and meeting new ideas. My greatest classroom has been people and places I’ve explored around the world. Most recently, I’m from Denver, Colorado in the United States. I taught in the public education scene for six years and the non-profit world, working with both adults and children, for many years prior to that. Over a decade as a freelance writer and a love of reading all things makes me perfectly suited for teaching. Plus, teenagers rock.
MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
The literature classroom is a place we can explore the world through texts and all the cultures and histories they hold. Learning to read and express (writing and speaking) are core human characteristics. We value a great conversation, the opportunity to open our minds to a wide variety of ideas and possibilities – and that is exactly what a classroom can offer. A safe space to intellectually and academically explore is important. Texts are not just bound paper with letters; they are advertisements, art, newspapers, and songs among other things. Learning is an inevitable part of life. Even a rock learns its shape from a river. In the literature classroom we’ll see that argument, storytelling, and passing information are worth engaging in and honing our skills in preparation for now and what each child’s unique future holds.
FUN FACT:
I write and read, paint abstract stories, do crafty arts, and try to cook like I am from everywhere. Cheese is a food group and trees and spiders are my friends.

Who am I?
I’m a 32-year-old Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am the middle child of three sons, born of a Hungarian mother and a Canadian father. I have lived and worked internationally for the past 12 years in France, South Korea and now in lovely Saigon! I am a polyglot, in love with languages and do my best to learn the local language of every country I live in. I am also a painter, a long-distance runner and I have always had a life-long passion for producing hip-hop music! I’m very excited to be joining the TAS team and I’m looking forward to meeting you all soon!
Educational Philosophy:
I believe that as a teacher, my job is not to tell you how or what to think, but to show you how any of life’s challenges, whether academic or otherwise, might be approached from your perspective. Life isn’t full of black and white decisions, and school isn’t about right or wrong answers. Rather, I see my goal as us working together to consider HOW to think about a problem and then we’ll speak about how you’d like to solve it. I also believe that learning a language doesn’t mean you have to focus solely on language acquisition; we can use the language you know to learn something new and interesting!

Ms. Lisa Callinan

- Bachelor of Science with concurrent Teacher Education – Biology, Physics and Agricultural Science (Limerick, Republic of Ireland)
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate – TEFL (Republic of Ireland)
Who am I?
I grew up and studied in the Republic of Ireland. I began my teaching career in the UK in 2016 and from there I moved to the UAE before returning home to teach in Irish schools. I have thoroughly enjoyed the range of experiences I have gained so far and I am excited to continue my teaching career in Vietnam. Since moving abroad, I have a new found love for travelling and can’t wait to jump at any opportunity to explore and learn about different parts of Vietnam. In my spare time I love being outdoors, whether it is hiking or sea-swimming.
My Educational Philosophy:
Facilitating student development and providing a holistic, engaging and meaningful educational experience for my students are at the core of my teaching philosophy. I believe there are five essential elements that are conducive to learning: my role is to act as a facilitator, students must have access to hands-on activities, they should be able to learn in creative and innovative ways, they need the opportunity to practice skills, and technology must be incorporated into the school day. I believe students are individuals and everyone learns in their own unique way. I use multiple methods of teaching to reach students so that no one is left behind. It is my desire to create a type of environment where students can meet their full potential.
I look forward to joining the TAS community and meeting you all in the coming academic year.

- MEd Secondary Education, The College of New Jersey
- Certificate in Secondary Education, The College of New Jersey
- IDLTM: International Diploma in Language Teaching Management
- DELTA: Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

WHO AM I?
Originally from Hartford, Connecticut, I spent time in various other states before first traveling to Vietnam in 2005. I have a background in science teaching, but have spent most of the past 15 years supporting EAL students across both high school and university settings. When I am not teaching I prefer to spend time with my family traveling in search of the best bowl of noodles in Vietnam.
MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
I find that students benefit greatly when science objectives are balanced with literacy development. When it comes to science assessment, I want to ensure that my students are developing a communicative competence in relation to course concepts. To do this we will firstly develop science reading and research skills as a foundation. Only then can students show their abilities to develop scientific explanations and engage in argumentation, as well as effectively design and carry out their own investigations.
In today’s world, education needs to develop 21st century skills that are transferable; skills that students can go on to successfully apply in university and the workplace. That’s why in the science classroom we focus on communicative teamwork and projects which allow students to build autonomous cooperative learning habits they will carry with them throughout their journey of lifelong learning.

WHO AM I?
I grew up in a small town in New Zealand, but have been living and teaching in Vietnam for over 12 years, where I’ve settled down, gotten married, and become a father. My interests include politics, philosophy, psychology, sports science, health and nutrition and more, and in my free time I’m usually playing with my son, lifting weights, and reading and writing about various academic topics.
MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:
Each and every student possesses their own unique needs, interests, and aptitudes, and similarly every teacher brings their own unique style and attitude to the classroom. While the approaches a teacher takes to each student and to the art of teaching as a whole need to account and adjust for their one of a kind character and characteristics, there are broadly speaking a set of values and ideals that I believe provide the greatest path to success. It is my belief that the best educational outcomes are achieved through a combination of:
A. Carefully designed lesson plans and materials developed to engage students and incrementally challenge them in a manner that scaffolds their growth towards greater achievement in a logical progression,
B. Delivered passionately and enthusiastically by teachers who set high standards for themselves and their pupils, who seek to act as positive role models, embodying the values of integrity, empathy, authenticity, respect, leadership, diligence and conscientiousness,
C. To students who are given the support, encouragement and opportunity to explore, investigate, research and create both independently and in small groups, to develop skills of self-reflection and teamwork, self-reliance and self-confidence through the frequent inclusion of student centered and active learning activities,
D. In a positive environment that strikes the right balance – for the unique makeup and attitude of each particular class – between the openness and tolerance and freedom that fosters creativity and inspiration and self-expression, and the structures and routines and order that promote consistency, cohesion and timely task completion, and which provide students with appropriate boundaries and expectations conducive to their success.
As a teacher I strive to instantiate these values in my classrooms, to perpetually refine and improve the manner in which I do so, to learn from others how these can be better achieved and to mentor others and share my own experiences and advice in turn. Though teachers we may be, we ourselves must forever remain students.
Additionally, I firmly believe that our roles as teachers is to teach students how to think, not what to think.
FUN FACT:
Although I am from New Zealand and might look the part, I’m not a rugby player, and have never actually played the game. I have done some boxing in the past though.
